#331: Speak to Chickens - Deciphering What Your Chickens are Saying to You (Melissa Caughey)

In This Episode of the Vegetable Gardening Show

#331: Speak to Chickens - Deciphering What Your Chickens are Saying to You (Melissa Caughey) In this episode of the Vegetable Gardening show, Mike chats with Melissa Caughey, the author of the book, "How to Speak Chicken." Scientific studies out of Australia have found 24 distinct sounds that chickens make that can be interpreted to be chicken speak. In other words, your chickens are trying to communicate with you.

In her new book, "How to Speak Chicken", award winning author, Melissa Caughey breaks down the science of these many sounds so that you too can hear what your chickens are trying to tell you.

In this interview she is going to go through how she put her book together, what was her motivation behind writing it, and go through the various ways your chickens communicate with you.

From there Melissa will talk about how keeping chickens at home has gone from a rare sight to a national movement, and the things you should know before you take the plunge into chicken keeping, if you haven't done so already.

This, and so much more, on this episode of The Vegetable Gardening Show!

About this episode's guest on the Vegetable Gardening Show, Melissa Caughey

#331: Speak to Chickens - Deciphering What Your Chickens are Saying to You (Melissa Caughey) I come from a career in medicine, a nurse practitioner in fact.

I never in a million years thought that keeping a flock of chickens would be in my future. Well, almost 7 years ago, a peeping package of six little fuzz balls arrived at our door step and I have not once looked back. I have always thought of my home as a nest for my family, a place filled with love and nurturing where new life, ideas, creativity, and relationships emerge. Over the years, this nest has become quite a place.

The chickens were the gateway to expanding our vegetable gardening efforts. They unlocked a passion for the locavore movement. They made me want to cook and serve their eggs and grow our own organic produce. They connected us with the earth and our natural surroundings. I started beekeeping and became a Master Gardener.

I have lots going on here at Tillyís Nest and you certainly might find me in some other places on the internet such as HGTV, DIY Network, Community Chickens, Grit Magazine and Country Living Magazine. I also served as the technical editor for Gardening with Free Range Chickens for Dummies. Over the years, Iíve won some wonderful awards, have met amazing people, and been on an incredible journey of growth. Iíve even written a best selling award winning book, A Kidís Guide to Keeping Chickens. My next book, How to Speak Chicken, will be available Fall 2017.

Iíve lived in many places, but Cape Cod, Massachusetts is where I call home. I live near the sea in a quaint historical New England village with my two children, husband and a Miniature Schnauzer named Sara. Winters are cold and summers are hot and if you are not careful enough to lock your car in the summer you might just end up with a seat full of fresh veggies from the generosity of a stranger.
